While the real estate market is definitely showing signs of moving in a positive direction, it can still be a challenge for buyers. And because of that challenge, some buyers are exploring less traditional homes as a way to save money, including yurts.
Yurts are having a definite renaissance—just look on Instagram! But while they can certainly be a fun place to spend time, the question is: what is it like to actually “live in the round?”
A recent article from realtor.com outlined key things to know about living in a yurt, including:
- Yurts are more spacious than you’d think… Yurts generally aren’t huge structures, but their unique round design makes good use of space, so yurts often feel much more spacious and roomy than you’d guess from the exterior.
- …but offer minimal privacy. If privacy is a priority, yurt living may not be for you. Yurts don’t have any interior walls; they’re one large space, which means if anyone else is in the yurt with you, you won’t have any privacy. Plus, the exterior walls are thin, so you’ll likely be able to hear everything going on outside, which can also contribute to feeling like there’s a lack of privacy.
- Yurts are eco and cost-friendly. If you’re looking for a home that’s environmentally friendly—not to mention budget friendly!—a yurt can be a good option. Yurts are great candidates for fully off-grid living, which is great for the environment, and the cost to build one is minimal compared to other types of real estate. (According to the article, the costs of building a 24-foot diameter yurt can range from $11,500 and $48,000.)
