Many people buy their first home thinking that it will be a starter home, and at some point down the line they’ll sell it for something larger, or more in line with their “dream” home.
But many people, particularly in today’s market, have opted to stay in their starter homes. So, the question is, if you’re in your starter home and are planning on staying there for the foreseeable future, what can you do to make it feel more like your forever home?
A recent article from realtor.com outlined renovations that will help transform a starter home into a forever home, including:
- Paint the interior. A fresh coat of paint is a fast, easy, and affordable way to completely transform a space. If you want your home to feel more tailored and customized to fit your own needs and wants — which is key for a home feeling like a forever home — paint the interior with colors that inspire you and align with design style and tastes.
- Invest in new appliances. Starter homes are often fixer-uppers, which often means the appliances may be old. If you’re planning to stay in your home for the long-term, consider investing in new appliances. You get to choose what kind of look, features, and functionality you’re after, which will make your space feel more like your own.
- Upgrade materials. If your starter home is filled with outdated materials and finishes, consider ripping out old carpet and installing hardwood floors, or replacing old, broken cabinet pulls with something more modern and aesthetically pleasing. That can be a great (and relatively affordable) way to refresh the space and give it more of a “forever home” kind of feeling.
